Pearl Jam surprised fans at their concert at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Thursday night (May 8) by inviting special guest Peter Frampton to join them in performing their classic Ten ballad, “Black.” Though the 75-year-old rock legend is suffering from a degenerative muscle disease, Frampton took the stage with the help of a cane to deliver a powerful rendition of the song alongside Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready. “This gentleman was someone we looked up to before the Ramones,” frontman Eddie Vedder said as he introduced Frampton. “Some of our first guitar heroes, [like] Jimmy Page and Pete Townsend, he was right up there. It was one of the reasons why we loved live records, and later we decided to release bootlegs because of his influence. It is our honor, because at this point, he’s become a good friend to the group, and we get to play with him tonight.” Pearl Jam continues their US tour with upcoming shows in Raleigh and Pittsburgh, while Frampton prepares to embark on his own solo tour across the country in June, including dates in Reno, Phoenix, and Las Vegas.
